An innovative programme to recruit and retain nurses and doctors in GP practices in east and north Hertfordshire has been shortlisted for a major health industry award.
The HSJ Awards 2018 announced its shortlist today and our project to inspire and empower primary care staff has been recognised in the Workforce category.
The team behind the project must now present to a panel of judges, before winners are announced at the HSJ Awards ceremony in London in November.
East and North Hertfordshire CCG set up a Primary Care Workforce and Education Network in 2016 with the aim of:
- Attracting new GPs and nursing staff to the area
- Coaching and developing existing general practice staff, particularly practice nurses so they can enhance their clinical skills and see more patients
- Supporting new ways of working by bringing in staff like paramedics and pharmacists into GP practices
“We provided easy-to-access training programmes, mentoring, peer support and investment in career progression for nurses and health care assistants in GP practices,” said Dr Robin Christie, the CCG’s Lead for Primary Care Workforce and Education.
“Placements in GP practices were offered to nursing students who would not normally see what life is like in a doctors’ surgery during their studies, and show that being a practice nurse can be an interesting and satisfying role.
“We also developed new ‘fellowship’ roles for newly-qualified doctors to encourage them to take up vacant posts in local GP practices and take part in project work in a specialist area of interest.”

Even getting this far is testament to the hard work and innovation of our team.”
